What is Rhinoplasty?
You can often hear the word “nose job” from anyone. Well, it’s a colloquial term for what’s medically coined as Rhinoplasty. It’s a cosmetic surgical procedure to reshape the nose and improve the proportion of your nose. Reshaping your nose can also enhance your facial features. Rhinoplasty isn’t only for vanity’s sake. Other people have defects in their noses that cause breathing issues. With rhinoplasty, these structural defects are corrected to improve breathing.
People may feel conscious about their nose size and shape. With the availability of rhinoplasty, they develop their self-esteem with a nose that’s proportionate to the other facial features.
What can rhinoplasty do?
- Reshape the nose size by either making your nose smaller or larger
- Adjust the width at the bridge of your nose
- Reshape the nasal tip that’s drooping, upturned, bulbous, or hooked
- Reposition your nostrils
- Make your nose symmetrical to the other facial features
Before deciding to have a “nose job” done, you should keep in mind that the face isn’t perfectly symmetrical. So, you should set realistic expectations when undergoing rhinoplasty. What matters most is that you can achieve facial balance and proportionate facial features.
A nose job is also important in certain conditions. You might consider it if you have difficulty in breathing because of a structural defect of the nose.
One of the most common causes is a deviated septum. Adjusting the structure of the nose by aligning it properly will help you improve your breathing.
Can you undergo rhinoplasty?
You can do a nose job if you meet the following requirements:
- You’re physically healthy
- You’re not a chain smoker
- You’re optimistic about having a nose job
- You keep in mind realistic expectations
- Your facial growth is complete
How much does rhinoplasty cost?
A nose job cost may vary depending on your needs and the doctor’s fees. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of the procedure is $5,046. It doesn’t include the miscellaneous expenses outside the surgery like before and after surgery fees and anesthesia. When deciding to go for a nose job, expect that you’ll have the following expenses:
- Medical and Laboratory Tests
- Medical prescriptions
- Surgical facility or hospital fees
- Post-surgery clothes
- Surgeon’s fees
You should also keep in mind that insurances may not shoulder these expenses especially if it’s not assessed as reconstructive surgery. If you need to undergo rhinoplasty for health reasons, your insurance company may cover the costs. However, it needs to be thoroughly examined and verified. Approval or authorization from the insurance company should also be presented.
It’s normal to be anxious thinking about what will be done on your nose. However, if you decide to do the procedure, seek a well-experienced surgeon to do the job for you. Make sure that you research about the surgeon and do a background check. If possible, let the surgeon show you before and after surgery photos of his/her clients. The information you’ll gather will give you an assurance of a safe and successful surgery.
